Recycling

The collection and often reprocessing of discarded materials for reuse. Recycled materials include those used in manufacturing processes and those used in consumer products. The recycled material is often degraded somewhat by use or processing and therefore must be converted to another purpose. For example, the processing of recycled newspaper and other paper wastes usually shortens their fibers, and the material cannot be used to make high-grade paper. Instead, it can be reprocessed to make cardboard or insulation. Recycling helps reduce pollution, prolong the usefulness of landfills, and conserve natural resources.

“Recycling”
Recycling is the process of re-using a given product (beyond its intended use), or producing a new product from a recyclable material.

“Recycling Definition.” Natural & Renewable Energy Sources – Clean Energy Ideas. Web. 11 May 2011 http://www.clean-energy-ideas.com/energy_defitions/defintion_of_recycling.html.

Here are some of the most recognized recycled paper products:

  • Newspaper
  • Shredded paper
  • Phonebooks
  • Cardboard
  • Magazines
  • Computer paper
  • Envelopes
  • Junk mail
  • Construction paper

When you recycle cardboard and other paper products you can create millions of new products such as:

  • Egg cartons
  • Paper towels
  • Tissue
  • Toilet paper
  • Newspaper
  • Phonebooks
  • Paper bags
  • Notebooks
  • Stamps
  • Business cars
  • Calendars

There are so many other products that you can make with recycled paper. And the best thing about paper recycling is that it used less chemicals and bleaches, which is safer for the environment.

What are the benefits of paper recycling?

Here are some benefits of recycling paper:

  • Recycling newspaper saves 14% of landfill space
  • For every ton of newspaper recycled you can save enough energy to power a television for 31 hours
  • Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees
  • Reduces sulfur dioxide emissions
  • Uses less fossil fuels
  • Most paper can be recycled up to 8 times to create new products
  • Leaves more trees for the sustainability of our environment
  • Saves energy

When you recycle paper you allow more trees to thrive and supply us with healthy oxygen to breathe.

Purpose:

The purpose of this PSA commercial is to create awareness about how new products can be made with old paper products. This PSA is intended to get people to recycle more often. We want to spread the message that recycling paper to make new products is one of the best ideas in the recycling industry.

Sender:

The sender of our PSA is the Eco team. The message will be sent by video and audio.

The Receiver:

The receivers are all age groups: adults, teenagers, children, and seniors. All of these categories of people should understand the message that we are trying to send them.

Medium:

Video

Message:

“Recycle. Clean & Simple.” Happy music will play in the background, the commercial will be filmed under sunny weather, and the audience will see a PSA that informs them that recycling paper products makes your life more simple, clean, happy, and beautiful. During the commercial, small facts about recycled paper products will show up so it can be read and it can inform the people that new products can be made with old paper products.

Generating Ideas for Potential Solutions & Choosing the Best Solution:

All of the group members contributed/generated ideas for the commercial but we came to the final idea of someone walking and throwing recyclable paper out in the recycling bin in a sunny day with interesting facts about new products made from 100% recycled paper.

Feedback:

The feedback for our commercial will be Richmond Hill.ca and we will analyze how much people go on the website to check when the garbage truck is coming, community events, information on recycling, compositing, and more information about Richmond Hill and how you can make the environment of our community better. The problem or challenge is that we need to find a way to inform people about the benefits of recycling paper. We will conduct research about what other products are made from 100% recycled paper and use those facts in our commercial for people to read.

Prototype, Test & Evaluate the Solution, and Reflect & Report on the Process:
We intend to make a storyboard and script as the prototype or model, get it evaluated by the teacher, and reflect on the process and feedback to make a final commercial by May 27th 2011.
